About Away
We have it
backwards.
We treat work as the thing that takes effort, and rest as the thing that happens in whatever's left over.
It's the wrong way round. The presence you bring to your work, your relationships, your life — the clarity and focus and steadiness of it — none of that is made during the pursuit. It's made in the away moments.
The pursuit spends you. The away is what makes you. And the away is the part we've stopped protecting.

The pursuit spends you.
The away is what makes you.
— The Away Manifesto
The uncomfortable truth
Why we can't do it
ourselves anymore.
We aren't strong enough to arrange our own away anymore.
It isn't a failure of character. We live inside systems built to hold us — technology optimised by the most capable companies on earth to be, by design, irresistible. Every quiet moment has something ready to fill it. Every gap has a feed.
And it goes deeper than distraction. We're so out of touch with ourselves, so rarely still enough to feel what we actually need, that even when we do claim time away we tend to choose it badly. We book the holiday that exhausts us. We rest in ways that don't restore.
The cost of this isn't abstract. Burnout is usually the first sign anyone notices — and by then the depletion is already deep. The body registers the change well before the mind does, and without something to read those signals — like the Away Halo — they go unnoticed until the damage is done.

The ecosystem
What Away is.
Away is an ecosystem built to give that back to you. To make stepping back effortless, and to make it right. Two halves, working as one.

A world of away.
Restoration at every scale, from a single breath to a week on a working farm. Real places, real practices, real time away — designed to make you more yourself. Conscious, regulated, sharp, restored. Not an escape from your life, but the thing that makes your life work.

Wearables that do the choosing for you.
Frictionless, invisible everyday objects — the Away Halo cap and a watch — that measure you physiologically as you move through your day. They feel the moment you start to drift and guide you, quietly and privately, toward the right away for that moment.
Then we measure that too. Whether the away worked. Whether you came back steadier. The guidance sharpens every time, and you stay in a quiet, continuous climb — more rested, more conscious, more capable, more you — without ever having to white-knuckle it yourself.
How it works
The invisible loop.
“Yoga makes me feel good” becomes a coherence lift you can measure, lasting about four hours. “That meeting drains me” becomes a real drop in the hour that follows it. You don't have to study any of it.”
The ecosystem is the point. Not the cap, not the app, not any single piece — but the loop between them. Something senses you, guides you to your away, and confirms it worked, over and over, until balance stops being something you fight for and becomes something the system holds for you.
And as it runs, it learns your life. The same quiet feedback that guides you to the right away also builds a picture of what is genuinely good for you and what isn't. The places that lift you and the ones that flatten you. The people you leave lighter for, and the ones you don't.
The insights are there when you want them, and quietly shaping your days when you don't. It works in the background, on autopilot, steering you gently and continuously toward a higher version of yourself.
No white-knuckling. No discipline required. Just the quiet accumulation of better days.

The origin
We built it raw.
We didn't assemble this from off-the-shelf parts and a pitch deck. We built every piece ourselves, by hand, and tested it the whole way through.
It started with COVID, which made one thing plain: where and how people spend their time directly shapes their mental and physical health. So we built a work-and-wellness retreat at Fernmount, in the Bellingen hinterland, to test what deliberate changes to environment did to wellbeing.
The effect was obvious and it lasted. The same person, in the city, sat at a baseline around 48. At the retreat, immersed in nature, quiet and unhurried, that climbed to the mid 70s. But at first we had no way to measure it properly — and that gap is exactly what led us to build the cap.
From there we built the rest, from the circuit up. Hardware, algorithms, software, platform, guidance engine. Retreat infrastructure that is mobile, modular, built in-house. Operational since 2022.
The founders
Who built it.
Away is the work of four founders who each own a part of the whole. Four people, one mission, every part built and owned in-house.
Founder of Away, TMPL and Petrichor. Designed and built the integrated land + infrastructure + platform strategy from the ground up.
Leads industrial design and the supply chain behind the wearables. The making of physical things, done right.
Leads growth, partnerships and reach. The relationships that scale the mission and put Away in the hands of people who need it.
Leads engineering, hardware and firmware. The circuit, the algorithms, the signal engine — built and owned in-house.
The mission
Where this goes.
We started with a way to feel when you've drifted and a way to come back. The real work is bigger.
Picture knowing — not guessing — which places restore you and which drain you. Which rhythms keep you sharp. Picture catching the early pattern of depletion, while a good night, a real walk, a proper week away is still enough to turn it around.
That's what we're building toward. A world that has learned to protect its away. That treats rest and restoration and presence as the real work — and makes them effortless enough that everyone can afford them.
Continuously, effortlessly, more yourself.
