Life Post Screens

You need to tell someone you are running twenty minutes late. A five second job. You take the phone out, and eleven minutes later you are watching a stranger renovate a bathroom in Sydney's inner west, the message is sent, and the thing you were doing before has gone cold on the bench.

That is not a lapse. That is the machine working.

The phone bundles things you genuinely need, the message, the map, the call to your mum, with machinery built to hold you once you arrive. The legitimate half is why nobody quits. It is also the hook everything else hangs from. Every errand pays a toll, and the toll is not measured in minutes so much as in what the minutes were attached to: a train of thought, a conversation, a kid mid sentence.

None of this is a weakness of yours. Herbert Simon saw it coming in 1971: a wealth of information consumes the thing it feeds on, and what information consumes is attention. He wrote that before the feed existed. The feed is simply that sentence, industrialised.

The errand no longer needs your eyes

Something changed in the last few years, quietly, underneath the noise about artificial intelligence. Software can now do errands rather than show you places to do them.

An agent is a program that acts on your behalf. You tell it the outcome, it works out the steps. And an open standard called the Model Context Protocol now lets an agent plug into your calendar, your messages, your bookings and your services the way an appliance plugs into a wall. The plumbing is boring, which is the point. What it means in a life is simple: sending the message, checking the time, booking the table and moving the meeting no longer require a glowing rectangle and your full frontal attention.

Here is the uncomfortable part. The agent is faster than you at these jobs, and not because it is cleverer. It is faster because it is undistractable. It does not see the feed. Nothing is being sold to it on the way to the send button. It completes the five second task in five seconds, every time, because no part of its path is designed to capture it.

You were never slow. You were taxed.

A voice in the bones, a phone in the pocket

So the shape of the answer becomes clear. A thing you wear that listens when you ask and speaks through the bones of your skull, ears open, so the street and the birds and the person beside you stay audible. The phone goes face down in a pocket and becomes what it should have been all along: plumbing. Connectivity, compute, nothing to look at.

You speak an intention. The agent resolves it. The answer comes back at the speed of a voice, and then it stops, because a voice ends. There is nothing to scroll. There is no surface. The interaction starts on something you already wanted and finishes when the task finishes, and the design refuses everything else. No feed, no badge, no red dot engineered to itch.

The first wave of screenless gadgets failed on a hard truth: a phone could do everything they did, and better. A smaller screen or a smarter pin is still playing the phone's game. What ends the screen era is a reason the phone cannot copy, and there is only one on offer.

The body.

The part only a sensor can do

A cap that reads presence can do something no assistant, speaker or pin has ever done: it can decline to deliver.

What reaches you, and how much, and when, is gated by how you actually are, read from your own signal rather than guessed from your tapping. Wound tight at 4 pm, the cap can hold the non urgent things until you are not. Settled on a walk, it can offer the piece you saved for exactly that kind of ten minutes. Curation by body rather than by engagement ranking.

Notice what that does to the incentives. The feed performs best when you are agitated, because agitated people scroll. A device gated by your own signal performs best when you are steady. For the first time since the smartphone arrived, the commercial interest and the person's interest point the same way.

What changes in a life

The first job is small and specific: the minutes just after you put the phone down, when the room feels flat and slow and the pull back is strongest. That gap is where resolve goes to die, and nothing on the market addresses it. A voice that meets you there, briefly, and hands you back to the room, is worth more than an hour of anything else this category sells.

Then the ordinary days change texture. The message gets sent from the school gate without the gate disappearing. The answer arrives while your hands stay in the dough. Evenings run longer, not because they contain more hours but because you are in more of them.

And over weeks, something quieter. The cap keeps a record of what your days actually do to you, which afternoons left you steadier, which habits cost more than they gave. Not a score to win. A mirror with a memory. Most of us lost the ability to feel the price of a habit somewhere around 2012; this hands the receipts back, and lets you decide.

We would call that outcome what it is: clearer days, steadier attention, more of your life spent in your life. We will not dress it in clinical language, because it is not a treatment and we will not pretend otherwise. It is closer to getting your time back with the lights on.

The object

Away Halo is a cap. Sensors that read presence, a microphone that listens only when you press, a switch that shuts it off where everyone can see, and two small transducers that speak through bone. It tethers to the phone you already own. It does not ask you to give the phone up. It asks you to turn it over.

The message takes five seconds again.
